One of my other loves

Post by Wildstar » Tue Jun 10, 2008 2:52 pm

A couple of you might already know (you know who you are), but one of my loves outside of Star Wars is ten-pin bowling (being a New Englander, I have to differentiate b/c we also have two other forms of bowling, candlepin and duckpin), a game to which I returned about a year ago. I started bowling in a league (my first in 15 years) a couple of weeks ago, and I've been blogging the entire road back (I've had double heel fractures about 9 years ago) at http://tenthboard.net

What inspired this post is the fact that yesterday, I had my best three-game series ever (albeit in practice)...a 689 where my only open frames came in the last game (a couple of splits and a miss of a single-pin spare). Had I had a mark or two more, I would've had my first 700 series. My post about it is currently the top item on my blog. I just hope this carries over into my league play. :D

I can't believe I haven't updated this thread since that 642 series, but I'll take this opportunity to note that I shot a 694 series later in the summer, and had I made just one spare that I missed, I would've had my first 700 series.

But what spurred on this update is that, in my latest winter league session, I bowled a 257 game, which qualified me for the USBC's 75 pins over average game award. It is my first award since I returned to the game. :D

Congrats! That makes you better than me at this. This is a lot harder than it looks.

I keep forgetting this thread is here. :D

I ended my winter league with a 183 average, which is the highest average I've ever booked (the term "book" refers to a local association's yearbook, which lists everyone's averages in every league in the association during a given season).

For those of you curious about what I look like when I'm bowling, there are a couple of videos of me up on YouTube now, one taken from the side and another from the back (which includes a couple of ball reaction shots). http://www.youtube.com/RichieVBowls is my YT channel. :D

I keep meaning to post this: last weekend, I had a new ball, a Storm Hy-Road (Storm being one of the most popular bowling ball makers), drilled up. I had a few practice games w/ it before using it in league for the first time on Wednesday night...shot a 245 first game with it on the way to a 618 set. :D

I bowled in a tournament last weekend, only my second tournament since my return to the game. I missed the cut, but only by 22 pins, which was a lot better than I did in my debut in the tournament last August, so I must say that I'm encouraged. :D

Since this topic is about "One of my other loves," and it is summer time that means it is Drum Corp International time! If you do not know what that is, it is like a professional marching band. I was fortunate to have been in a Corps called the Crossmen in 1990. I taught high school drumlines for 9 years. Here is a great line this year... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ONem4ptehA

JP, if I ever become a PBA member, it might only be that I bowl the East regional tournament stop out in western Mass. every year.

Continuing the theme of "other loves", I am a huge roller coaster fanatic. I just got back from 4 day road trip to Sandusky, OH where I went to Cedar Point Amusement Park. I got to ride all of their world famous coasters. I wish I had pictures but I forgot my camera at home.
